Warming up.

Reading
ENGLISH JOKES
There are thousands of jokes in English, which use a “play on words” to be funny. They are funny because one person does not understand the other. Try and think of jokes in Chinese that use a “play on words”. Now read some of these customer and waiter jokes. Can you match the joke with the explanation?
1. C: hat’s that fly doing in my soup?
W: Swimming, I think!
2. C: What’s that?
W: It’s bean soup.
C: I don’t want to know what it’s been. I want to know what it is now.
3. C: Waiter. Will the pancakes be long?
W: No, sir. Round.
Explanation
A. The first person is asking for information about time. The second person treats it as a question about shape.
B. The first person is angry about something and wants to say “Why is this here?” The second person treats it as a request for information, and gives an answer to the question.
C. The answer to the question contains a word which, when spoken, can have two meanings.
Speaking
Think of a funny story in pairs. It can be an English story or a Chinese story. Follow this procedure.
A. Prepare a joke and tell your partner in English.
B. While telling your story, use the expression on your face and some acting to help make the story as funny as you can.
C. After telling your story to your partner, let him/her give you some advice.
D. Then let your partner tell his/her story.
E. Finally tell your story to the class.
Writing
Now write down your story in a logical order:
A. Write down your story in a logical order:
B. First… Then… Next… Finally/At last
C. For each part of your story try to find the most interesting words you can to describe how you felt or what was happening.
D. Then write out your story using these interesting words.
E. Read through your story.
F. Then show it to your partner. Let him/her suggest some new and exciting words.
G. Help your partner with his/her story.
H. Write out the story and put it into a class collection of stories.
LEARNING TIP
A good way to improve your English vocabulary is to read short stories. Make sure you choose these stories carefully. You can check to see if they are at the right level for you by reading the first paragraph. It should:
● be easier than your school textbook;
● contain no more than two percent of new words;
● be easily understood the first time you read it;
Whenever you finish your story, you will feel a sense of success. So always carry a book of English short stories with you.
